One of my favorite discoveries in painting and illustration art was purchasing both a Paasche and a Badger airbrush along with a selection of the Winsor Newton acrylic brushes. In the beginning of my career as an artist and illustrator I chose watercolors and oil paints as my first tests to see if I liked this style of art. After that I I tried acrylic paints and my discovery of them became my main source of painting. I found that that was best for me since I like to work with speed for businesses and individuals who want a painting completed within a limited time. I was able to work with it best since it dries within minutes whereas oil paints take hours and days to dry and watercolors dried to quick. When I began working with the airbrush and paintbrush together it gave me the perfect balance of smooth and soft surface along with fine lines and details. I chose this portrait of a model as my first project to test the field of airbrush art. For the last twenty years airbrush has been my secondary tool with the fine brushes as my primary tool and will always be my favorite kind of fine art. In the painting of Top Gun with Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis along with the Top Gun patch, I used the the airbrush throughout the painting to give attention to the folds, the body features and the photo look in the background. It was also a perfect way of doing a limited time project and keep the detail and realism in the painting.

This painting shows the techniques working with a Badger airbrush and fine art hand brushes. This was a mural that I was asked to do for a women’s clothing store. It was painted on a Richeson Hardboard Masonite Panel to give a smooth surface. The painting was done on a 48” x 48” panel instead of directly on the wall so it could be moved on different walls when the owner changed the layout. The surface was done with Gesso giving a thin texture instead of using canvas to keep away from the grooves. I worked with Grumbacher acrylics using both the airbrush and various brands of paintbrushes. It was painted from a black and white photograph from an old photography magazine in the 1950’s. Working with a subject like this is a job I like to do because it broadens your imagination to decide what the colors are going to be transferring from black and white to color. I mostly like to work with the various sizes of a hand brush but in paintings like this the airbrush gives the smooth soft look for clothing along with flesh tones used in the majority of this painting.

Art has been the one thing that I have enjoyed either for businesses, individuals, or just for the joy of expressing my heart and talent on canvas. One of my greatest opportunities has been working with children both in schools and individually. It is sharing a part of myself that every artist expresses into his art itself.
